Aurora Mitigates Flood Risk and Improves Safety of Willow Farm Stream

After being the subject of erosion and accumulation of hazardous debris, Aurora has completed rehabilitation of a stream in the town’s north end near Willow Farm and St. Andrew’s College.

$500,000 from the CCBF was used to do work that reduces flood risk, provides protection and resilience against climate change, and eliminates hazards and unsafe conditions for residents.

The stream was reinforced against erosion by raising the stream bed and stabilizing the banks and slopes with retaining walls. As well, the overall waterflow was improved by replacing parts of nearby sewers and restoring capacity of multiple culverts. To top it off and make the area more pleasant, new trees and vegetation were planted, and safety fences and a bridge were installed.

The project received a 2024 LSRCA Clean Water Award and was recognized by the local conservation authority for improving local waterways, ecosystems, and access to nature.

Residents can now enjoy the updated walking trail along the stream and have peace of mind that the area can recover better naturally, keeping the local residential area and ecosystem thriving for years to come.
