Brantford Introduces Green Bin Program, Reducing Waste and GHG Emissions

In 2023, The City of Brantford rolled out a new Green Bin composting program to all single-family homes. The program was funded by a $1.5 million investment from the Fund.

Previously, waste collection crews would put all waste, organic or not, into the Mohawk Street Landfill. To reach their goal of becoming a “Zero Waste City”, and to extend the life of the Landfill, the City decided that a compost program would be the best solution.

The City rolled out the program to 35,000 homes, out of the approximately 44,000 in Brantford. Participating households’ organic waste from the green bins is processed and converted into nutrient-rich compost. This program reduces greenhouse gas emissions, extends the life of the landfill, and brings Brantford one step closer to reaching their goal of becoming a Zero Waste City.
