$2.2 Billion In Additional federal Gas Tax Funding for 2021

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland today announced $2.2 billion in additional federal Gas Tax funding for 2021.

The additional funding will support infrastructure projects across Canada and aid the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Fund – which Minister Freeland today confirmed would be rebranded as the Canada Community-Building Fund – is a stable and predictable source of infrastructure funding for municipalities.

Vital projects from a range of eligible categories are supported by the Fund.

For example, the City of London is investing $4.5 million of federal Gas Tax funding in the creation of an Organic Rankine Cycle system that will convert heat from incinerated biosolids into electricity. The project will save the City $600,000 per year in electricity costs.

The Municipality of Kincardine invested $305,000 from the Fund in a disaster mitigation project. High lake levels caused erosion, and 600 metres of the shoreline is being protected by the work.

In the City of Kenora, $1.1 million in Gas Tax funding was invested in replacing the Coker Bailey Bridge with a new structure, improving public safety and transportation access.

And the City of Kawartha Lakes invested $4.6 million in federal Gas Tax funding in a series of road reconstruction projects to improve safety.

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) administers the Fund to all municipalities in Ontario except for the City of Toronto. Funds are allocated to municipalities on a per-capita basis.
