Accessible Doors in Wilmot Help Reduce Barriers at Municipal Facilities
There’s an incredible artist space in Wilmot Township that allows seniors to hone their craft and make beautiful pieces to sell in the community.
The Wilmot Seniors’ Woodworking Centre welcomes residents aged 55 and up to practice the arts of woodcarving, stained glass and metal sculpting. The building offers two classrooms with all the equipment needed – including lathes, mills, bandsaws, welding and bending machines. The pieces made at the Centre are showcased at an annual community holiday sale.
Earlier this year, Wilmot Township invested $27,000 from the Canada Community-Building Fund into installing an accessible door at the Seniors’ Woodworking Centre, along with new automatic doors at the Wilmot Recreation Centre pool changerooms.
Both improvements allow everyone to have access to these spaces and ensure they’re compliant with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. Thanks to the CCBF, individuals with mobility challenges will have no problem accessing either municipal facility, further reducing barriers in the community and promoting independence and participation in municipal events and activities.
