Elk Lake Invests CCBF at Local Museum

The Township of James has invested the Canada Community-Building Fund into further renovations at it's Elk Lake Heritage Museum.

In 2020, the Township invested the CCBF into building an accessible ramp at the front of the building to ensure everyone had the ability to visit.

The museum was built in 1902, and operated as a Roman Catholic church on the first floor, with a school on the second floor. A new school was built in 1911, and the church moved out of the building in 1978.

Since the building is the community's oldest structure, further renovations were required to ensure it remains open to the public. In the past, the Township has added a new roof, windows and doors, along with the accessible ramp. In 2023, work will be completed on the floor supports underneath the structure.

The Elk Lake Heritage Museum is home to a vast collection of artifacts dating back to the fur trading and mining periods of Elk Lake's history. It's also home to pieces related to the Township's first Mayor, Jack Munroe. Munroe was a prospector and decorated veteran of the First World War, and also a champion boxer.
