Leamington's New Sidewalk: Bridging the Gap for Active Transportation

The Municipality of Leamington has taken a significant stride towards improving its active transportation network with the recent construction of a new 190 m sidewalk on Ellison Avenue.

This vital project, funded in part by a $90,000 investment from the CCBF, connects the most frequented section of the municipal trail network to additional bike lanes, paving the way for the expansion of the Municipality's active transportation network.

The Municipality's active transportation plan identified the area as a hotspot for pedestrians. The project includes a signalized intersection and a marked pedestrian crossover, ensuring safe passage for both cyclists and pedestrians.

What makes this project even more impactful is its consideration of various elements, such as safety, traffic, active transportation, pedestrian access, nearby institutions, and future growth prospects. The new sidewalk improves access to three local schools and serves as the primary gateway to the Municipality’s recreation centre, an essential hub for the community. The sidewalk also connects the trail leading to Leamington's waterfront, a renowned tourist destination that draws substantial bicycle and pedestrian traffic — traffic that the project aims to encourage further.

The Municipality is also looking ahead to future land use development within the area, anticipating increased traffic and active transportation volumes. This strategic foresight ensures that the new sidewalk not only addresses current needs but also aligns with the Municipality's long-term vision for a more accessible and active community.
