Same Great Fund but New Name
In March 2021, the federal government announced that the federal Gas Tax Fund would soon be receiving a new name. Today’s news release confirms that the federal Gas Tax Fund is now the Canada Community-Building Fund (CCBF). This change was made to better reflect the program’s evolution over time but does not alter any of the requirements or objectives of the Fund.
In addition to the new name, Canada has announced that fire stations and fire halls are now eligible for funding under the CCBF, increasing the number of eligible project categories to 18. This expansion of eligibility means that Ontario’s municipalities have increased flexibility to prioritize investments for critical local infrastructure. Eligibility criteria for all other categories remain the same.
Alongside these changes, Canada confirmed the distribution of the top-up funding announced in March. This year, Ontario’s municipalities are receiving more than double their total allocation from last year, bolstering each community’s ability to provide integral infrastructure investments as needed. The Canada Community-Building Fund will continue to provide permanent and predictable infrastructure funding to municipalities across Ontario, as outlined in existing municipal funding agreements, although the impact will be amplified following these recent changes.
