Selwyn Township Completes Major Improvements In Local Business Area
Selwyn Township used investments from the Canada Community-Building Fund in 2020 to complete a major roadway project that will serve to strengthen its community for years to come.
The commercial core area in the hamlet of Young’s Point, just north of Lakefield, ON, has long been identified in Selwyn’s Community Improvement Plan (CIP) as an area requiring investment. The intention of Selwyn’s CIP is to act as a planning and economic development framework that includes public improvement projects and financial incentive programs designed to stimulate private sector investment and building rehabilitation and development.
With this in mind, rehabilitation of Young’s Point was a priority project. With help from the CCBF and other funding partners, Selwyn reconstructed 0.53 kilometres of Nathaway Drive and River Road in Young’s Point. The project included drainage and stormwater improvements, road surface upgrades to asphalt, and installation of roadside amenities within the CIP area, including streetlights, sidewalks, and landscaping features.
Despite delays due to the pandemic, roadwork continued through the summer of 2020 and was completed in the fall of 2020. Selwyn was able to complete this project with minimal impact on the businesses located in Young’s Point, and thanks to these upgrades, those same businesses welcomed visitors to their new and improved core in 2021.
