Stormwater Pond Restoration Completed in Barrie
The City of Barrie recently completed a full restoration of one of its stormwater ponds that was installed more than a decade ago.
The LT14 stormwater pond, located at J.C. Massie Way at Cundles Road East, was originally constructed in 2013 as part of the Duckworth Street Interchange expansion and the Penady commercial development, to provide water quality and flood control.
However, since 2016, several performance, operational and structural deficiencies have become apparent. Making these repairs was a priority for the City to ensure legislative compliance.
Improvements included construction of a new clay liner, installation of a Flexmat (a product used to help prevent erosion), removal and rehabilitation of the berm wall, and increasing erosion control storage volume to include flows from a nearby commercial development. Additionally, dead trees were removed from the pond.
The project is now complete, and observations so far show that the pond is maintaining its permanent pool level and aquatic plants are flourishing.
