Take me out to the Ballgame at Dickson Stadium

Dickson Stadium is more than a historical landmark in the City of Cambridge. It’s a place where thousands of strikes have been called, and home runs have been hit. It’s 100 years of baseball games on one field, and a century of cheering crowds watching from the 500-seat grandstand.

The stadium is a cherished part of the history, identity and cultural heritage in the community of Galt. It has been the home of the Guelph Biltmores, Cambridge Cubs and the semi-professional Galt Terriers during its over century long history. As a community gathering place, Dickson Stadium also hosts the annual Cambridge fair.

Between 2023 and 2024, the City invested $1.2 million from the Canada Community-Building Fund to breathe new life into the Dickson Park grandstand. The restoration of the grandstand aimed to preserve the historic look and feel of the park, while enhancing overall safety and functionality.

The City spent more than a year on the project. Work involved removing the concrete walls and metal decking underneath the bleachers. Deteriorating concrete throughout the structure – like the stairs and retaining walls – was repaired. All the wooden framing supporting the bleachers was either repaired or replaced, all the bleacher seating was replaced and coated, and the roof was updated.

The finishing touch was a fresh coat of white and green paint – bringing the grandstand back to life. With this investment in local recreation, the City of Cambridge is retaining a hidden gem and a historical monument in the community of Galt.
